PITCHING, INSIDE WORDLING PLUS

Starts September 7

 WHAT WE’RE WORKING ON
Finding stronger ideas, sharpening angles, writing better pitches, and building editor relationships.

HOW WE’LL DO IT
Live workshops, pitch clinics, trainings, challenges, guest sessions, and community support.

HOW LONG
8 weeks

Ready to land high-paying assignments—again and again?

You’ve thought about pitching. You’ve looked at the publications you’d love to write for. Maybe you even started imagining your byline in The New York Times. (We love a good vision board moment.)

Now it’s time to go from inspired… to consistent.

1

INSPIRED

I should pitch more.

2

CONSISTENT

I know what to pitch
and where to send it.

3

PAID

I have assignments
coming in.

One great pitch is exciting. But a system that helps you land high-paying assignments on repeat? That’s a writing career.

This autumn, Wordling Plus is spending eight weeks focused exclusively on pitching.

The live calls, workshops, pitch clinics, guest sessions, resources, community conversations, and member challenges will all be built around helping you find stronger ideas, write better pitches, and turn them into paid assignments.

You join Wordling Plus, and for eight weeks, we work on landing high-paying assignments together.

HOW THE EIGHT WEEKS WORK

Four ways we'll help you turn ideas into assignments.

You’re not joining for a folder full of content. For eight weeks, the live programming, library, community, and challenges all point towards the same thing: getting better pitches out into the world.

01

Live Events

Live support throughout the eight weeks, with space to bring the ideas, pitches, and sticking points you need help with.

02

Library Spotlight

Courses, workshops, and resources (including real pitches that sold) selected for the exact stage of pitching you’re working through.

03

Community

A private place to ask questions, share the awkward bits, get advice, and celebrate wins with other writers.

04

Daily Challenges

Small daily actions with points and prizes to keep you doing the work instead of endlessly preparing for it.

"Natasha knows what she is talking about and shares it in an easily digestible format. She offers tons of great advice, checklists, assignments and tips. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to take their writing seriously!"

- AMY CLARKE

"I thoroughly enjoyed the resources, thank you for that Natasha. The most important thing I learnt was that pitching and writing for magazines is very much a psychology game as well as a skill. The course was easy to navigate and the information supplied very clear and full of valuable tips."

- NATALI LEKKA

"I got much, much more than I expected and am really impressed with Natasha. She is amazing. She "gets" freelance writing and how to query for work up one side and down the other. It's by far one of the best courses I've taken. I learned a lot and it is having a major impact on my work. I recommend it highly."

- LESLIE LANG

WHAT WE’LL WORK ON

Good pitching is mostly good judgment.

Writing a pitch isn’t particularly difficult.

Knowing what to pitch, who to pitch it to, and whether to keep pushing when nobody bites is where things get harder.

That’s what we’re going to get good at.

Over eight weeks, we’ll work on how to:

Find the angle that turns an interesting topic into an assignable story.

Figure out which publications are worth your time.

Study a publication like a contributor, not just a reader.

Understand what an editor is actually looking for when a pitch lands in their inbox.

Write pitches that make the story, the timing, and your reason for writing it immediately clear.

Send the damn thing before you’ve revised the life out of it.

Follow up, repitch, and rework ideas instead of treating silence as a verdict.

Build enough momentum that one unanswered email doesn’t derail your entire pitching strategy.

From idea to next move

You can bring the ideas you’ve been sitting on, the pitches you never sent, the publications you’d love to write for or absolutely nothing except the knowledge that you want better assignments than the ones currently coming your way.

By the end of these eight weeks, you won’t just have written a few good pitches.

You’ll know exactly how to keep finding strong ideas, shaping them into pitches, and selling them to editors.

01

FIND THE STORY

Turn a broad topic into a sharp angle an editor can say yes to.

02

FIND THE RIGHT HOME

Choose the publication, find the editor, and shape the story to suit the outlet.

03

WRITE THE PITCH

Make the case for the story: what it is, why it matters, and why you should write it.

04

SEND MORE PITCHES

Build a pitching rhythm you can sustain, so sending good ideas becomes part of your working week.

05

KNOW WHAT TO DO NEXT

Know when to follow up, when to rethink the pitch, when to try another publication, and when to move on.

"For anyone wanting to live and work as a freelance writer, this woman—Natasha Khullar Relph—is seriously damn helpful. Since I did her course last year I’ve written for Aeon, Discover, BBC Wildlife (and was interviewed by NPR in the US) and am now working on stories for Wired, GOOD and (maybe) Marie Claire. It’s full-on and intense and she takes no shit—nor excuses!! But it works…"

WORKSHOP

Writing for the Trades

Discover overlooked, high-paying markets with less competition.

Learn how to pitch trade publications, build relationships with editors, and turn specialist markets into a source of steady freelance work.

Break down your idea, sharpen the angle, and build the pitch around the four elements every successful query needs.

COURSE

Your First Pitch

Send your first pitch with clarity, confidence, and zero cringe.

There’s an art to a strong pitch, and a science. This course walks you through the structure of a winning query letter and helps you avoid the rookie mistakes that lead to silence.

2-4 · MOMENTUM

When you need to stop thinking and start sending

COURSE

A high-intensity, low-fluff challenge to build serious pitching momentum.

You don’t land top-tier assignments by waiting around. This course gives you a structured, strategic path to pitch 30 story ideas in 30 days, and builds a marketing system you can rely on long after the month is over.

When the editor says yes

COURSE

Your First Assignment

What to do once you land the assignment, and how not to mess it up.

You’ve pitched. You’ve landed it. Now what? This course covers the nitty-gritty: contracts, rates, rights, interviews, and everything you need to know to crush your first assignment and make sure editors want you back.

WORKSHOP

10 Steps to a Finished Feature Article

Get the assignment over the finish line without making the writing process harder than it needs to be.

A step-by-step system for planning, drafting, and finishing feature stories with less overwhelm and a lot more confidence.

THE OTHER HALF OF THE MEMBERSHIP

Because knowing how to pitch isn’t the same as actually doing it.

03 · COMMUNITY

Do the work with people who get it.

Inside the community, you’ll have other writers doing the same work at the same time. It’s the place to bring the part you’d otherwise sit alone and overthink.

ASK for advice when you’re stuck.
SHARE pitches, ideas, wins, and disappointments.
DECODE the weird editor reply you’re not quite sure how to read.
CELEBRATE landing the assignment, or simply hitting send.
04 · DAILY CHALLENGE

Keep moving, one small action at a time.

Every day, you’ll get a small pitching challenge: generate an idea, research a publication, find an editor, tighten an angle, send the pitch, follow up, or do one of the hundred tiny things that eventually add up to paid work.

POINTS for every challenge
PRIZES along the way
3 GRAND PRIZES Welcome to your pitching-for-points era.

I am a former reporter who entered freelancing with mixed success a few years ago. I have taken Mediabistro courses and read widely about the profession, and nowhere have I come across the tools, strategies, support and community that Natasha offers. It's a detailed template for success backed by sharp insights into how the business works and how human beings in the business work. All of this is delivered with incredible humor, humanity and the wisdom of years as a freelancer. Freelancing is no easy feat and it's up to the writer to put in the work, but this is one teacher who is invested in her students' success. I can't recommend this enough.

- TAL ABBADY

"The volume and speed at which you're taught to pitch is invaluable, and its something that I've found to be lacking with other pitch courses."

- HANIYA RAE

WHO AM I?

Hi, I'm Natasha!

I’ve lived on four continents, written for publications in 80+ countries, and contributed to The New York Times, TIME, National Geographic, CNN, BBC, Psychology Today, ABC News, Marie Claire, Vogue, Ms., and more.

I’ve won awards for my journalism, including Development Journalist of the Year, and contributed to bestselling books including The Lonely Planet Travel Anthology: True Stories From The World’s Best Writers.

But the reason I can teach pitching isn’t simply that I’ve had good bylines.

It’s that I’ve spent more than 20 years figuring out how to keep getting them.

I know what it’s like to need the next assignment. To have an idea you’re convinced should sell and hear absolutely nothing back. To wonder whether you need a better pitch, a better market, a better idea, or simply to try again.

And I know what changes when you stop treating every pitch like a one-off gamble and start understanding how the whole thing works.

That’s what I’ve taught hundreds of writers to do. Many have gone on to land $1-a-word assignments, break into publications they once thought were out of reach, build six-figure freelance careers, and create businesses they can run from anywhere.

Over these eight weeks, I’m going to show you the same things I learned by doing this for a living: how to find ideas worth selling, make smart decisions about where to send them, write pitches editors can actually use, and keep going long enough for the work to compound.

I can teach you the process, help you make better decisions, and tell you when I think you’re getting in your own way.

Then you have to hit send.

"Within 10 days of starting I secured two assignments, together worth over $1,800. Those alone paid back the cost of the course many times over."

- DAVID MASTERS

"You really know your stuff. I would recommend any writer to take this course. It's revolutionary."

- LAURA YEAGER

"She makes this ambitious task seem achievable. Sign up. You won't be sorry and you'll probably see yourself in print."

- NANCY WORLEY

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a course?

No. You’re joining Wordling Plus, our ongoing membership for writers.

For eight weeks this autumn, pitching is what we’ll be working on together. The live calls, workshops, critiques, challenge, community conversations, and featured resources will all be focused on helping you find stronger ideas, write better pitches, and land better assignments.

When the eight weeks are over, Wordling Plus continues with a new focus.

What if I’m completely new to pitching?

Come on in.

We’ll start with the things you actually need to know: how to find an idea worth pitching, turn it into a story, choose the right publication, work out what the editor needs to see, and write the pitch.

You do not need to do a preparatory course before joining the programme designed to teach you this stuff.

What if I’m already pitching and getting published?

Then we’ll work on what comes next.

Maybe you want to pitch more consistently. Maybe you’re getting assignments but not at the rates you want. Maybe you’ve broken into a few publications and can’t seem to get much further. Or perhaps pitching still takes far more time and energy than it should.

You don’t need beginner pitching advice. You need sharper decisions, better targets, stronger ideas, and a process that gets you more of the work you actually want.

Do I need to have a pitch ready before we start?

No.

You can arrive with something you’re already working on, an idea you haven’t figured out yet, or nothing at all. We’ll spend time generating ideas during the eight weeks, so there is absolutely no requirement to turn up on September 7 with anything already done.

Although if you have one, bring it. We love a volunteer.

What if I can’t come to every live session?

That’s fine. This is a membership for working writers, not a hostage situation.

Come to the sessions you can. Replays will be available, and the challenges, resources, and community will keep running between calls.

The live sessions are there to give you feedback, conversation, and support when you need them, not to give you another attendance record to worry about.

Why join Wordling Plus instead of just taking a pitching course?

Because most writers don’t have an information problem.

You can learn the basic structure of a pitch in an afternoon. The harder part is looking at your own idea and knowing whether the angle is strong enough, deciding where to send it, figuring out why something isn’t working, keeping going after three editors ignore you, and doing all of that consistently enough for it to produce paid work.

That’s where the live coaching, critiques, challenges, community, and feedback matter.

What happens after my first three months?

If you join for $297, you’ll have Wordling Plus for three months. After that, your membership continues at $99 a month unless you cancel.

If you already know you want to stay for the longer haul, you can join for a full year for $997.

Either way, you’re joining Wordling Plus itself. Pitching is simply where we’re putting our attention this autumn.

I have a question you haven’t answered.

Email us and ask away.

We'll try to get back to you within 24-48 hours, but if you don't hear from us within that time frame, we give you permission to yell at us in your follow-up email.

Ready to turn your ideas into better-paid assignments?
